How Greens for Means Began
In 2008, in a small Ohio town, a 17-year-old was mowing lawns to earn money over the summer. What started as a summer business quickly became something much bigger.
That same year, his grandmother was diagnosed with lymphoma. The news hit hard. She spent about a month in the hospital, underwent treatment, and battled through bouts of pneumonia. Watching her fight inspired him to do something — not just for her, but for everyone facing similar struggles.
"I wanted to do something in honor of her, so other people don't have to go through what she's going through."
— Our founder, 2008
He created Greens for Means — the charitable arm of his lawn care operation. He began asking clients if they'd donate $5 on top of his fee, with all proceeds going to the Lymphoma Research Foundation. He raised $200 in his first season alone.
Working out of Wayne, Medina, and Tuscarawas counties with his father's equipment, he built a sponsor-backed operation. Twelve local sponsors signed on, represented on a T-shirt he wore while mowing and a poster displayed at a local fitness center.
After learning business fundamentals at a career center, our founder was motivated to keep growing — asking questions, learning, and dreaming about what Greens for Means could become.
The Mission Today
What began as one teen with a lawnmower has evolved into a community platform connecting volunteers with neighbors who need help with their yards. Greens for Means now serves communities — coordinating free lawn care for seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and families going through hard times.
The promise made back in 2008 — "it will always be with me" — has held true. The same spirit of generosity and community that started in a small Ohio town now powers every yard transformation, every volunteer hour, and every nomination.
